Engineering profile laboratory of K.I. Satpayev Kazakh National Technical University

At the initiative of the President and Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan ten engineering profile laboratories in priority lines of scientific and technological development were established in regions of country to integrate science and higher education. Engineering profile laboratory in mining-and-metallurgical, oil and gas sector of K.I. Satpayev Kazakh National Technical University was established according to the order of rector in August of 2007 on the basis of order of Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan from 15th March of 2007.

lipAccording to the world standards laboratory is provided with modern and unique equipment:
1. Jeol JSM-6490 LA low vacuum scanning electron microscope with an embedded energy dispersive X-ray analyzer.
2. NTEGRA Prima Research Probe Nanolaboratory.
3. X’Pert MPD PRO (PANalytical) X-ray diffractometer.
4. Optima 5100 DV (Perkin Elmer) Optical Emission Spectrometer with inductively coupled plasma (ICP).
5. Clarus 600 gas chromatograph with Clarus 600 S mass spectrometer (Perkin Elmer).
6. METAM LV-31 Metallographic microscope (LOMO).
7. UIK-S (2) Plant for research core samples.
8. The scientific-educational laboratory of nanotechnology on the basis of the “NanoEducator” scanning probe microscope.
9. Lines of mechanical and final sample preparation.
Main guidelines of EPL activity:
Conducting of analytical work and scientific researches; Participation in scientific-educational programmes and projects of Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan and other ministries, departments; Conducting joint scientific researches with native and foreign universities, science centers in priority directions of science and technology; Rendering services to private agencies.
Main achievements of EPL in education sphere:
In 2008-2009 were organized introductory lessons about using science equipment for more than 250 students and postgraduates. More than 100 students, 50 masters, 70 postgraduates, 90 candidates and 6 doctorates conduct researches on the equipment of EPL. 30 lessons were organized for students, undergraduates and postgraduates on the basis of “NanoEducator” scanning probe microscopes, and 20 undergraduates and postgraduates accomplished their diploma projects and master’s theses.

lip2 Main achievements of EPL in conducting research works:
Laboratory signed contracts with A.B. Bekturov Institute of Chemical Sciences, “Center of Earth Sciences, Metallurgy and Ore Benefication” JSC and “KazTransOil” JSC for 5 million tenge. In accordance with Fundamental research programme of Science Committee of Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan the “Developing of scientific basis and technology of increasing reservoir recovery” project for 6 million tenge is being realized. According to the programme of Science Committee of Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan “New technologies for hydrocarbon and mining and metallurgical sectors and for related with them service industries in 2009-2011” the project of “Developing polymer-protected and gel-immobilized metal nanoparticles as nanocatalyst for hydrogenation and oxidation of hydrocarbons” for 7,5 million tenge is being realized too. In cooperation with the scientists and specialists of Turkey, Romania, Germany, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tadzhikistan the project was claimed to NATO “Science for Peace and Security” for “Sustainable management and elimination of PCB-type pollutants in Central Asia” theme. On long-term outlook laboratory believes that it will become Scientific-educational and Technology Center, which will be able to bridge a gap between education, research works, experimental design works and commercialization of science results through Science park of K.I. Satpayev Kazakh National Technical University.

Scientific and technical programs and projects of EPL of K.I. Satpayev Kazakh National Technical University

1. Fundamental research programme of Science Committee of Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan the “Developing of scientific basis, new technologies and creation of promising materials for different functional purposes” for 2009-2011.
Project: “Developing of scientific basis and technology of reservoir recovery”
Aim of project: “Developing of theoretical and practical basis of increasing reservoir recovery using amphoteric hydrogels”
Main tasks:

  1. Research of physicochemical and rheological properties of amphoteric gels in water and water-salt solutions;
  2. Definition level and kinetics swelling of hydrogels in mixtures of different slats;
  3. Particle-size and physicochemical analysis of core samples from selected oil-fields;
  4. Studying of sorption and filtration properties of oil-bearing rocks under conditions simulating formation ones;
  5. Conducting laboratory researches of increasing reservoir recovery;
  6. Experiment of polymer flooding, which simulates formation conditions, on UIK-S (2) Plant for research core samples.

Expected results:

  1. Physicochemical and rheological properties of amphoteric gels in water and water-salt solutions depending on formation conditions;
  2. Level and kinetics of hydrogels swelling in water-slat solutions depending on salt nature, temperature and pH medium;
  3. Physicochemical characteristics of core materials and oils from different fields;
  4. Sorption and filtration characteristics of core materials and oil-bearing rocks under simulated formation conditions;
  5. Laboratory plant of studying reservoir recovery;
  6. Giving practical recommendations in using polymer flooding technology.

2. Programme of Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan “New technologies for hydrocarbon and mining and metallurgical sectors and for related with them service industries” for 2009-2011
Project: “Developing polymer-protected and gel-immobilized metal nanoparticles as nanocatalyst for hydrogenation and oxidation of hydrocarbons”
Aim of project: Developing polymer-protected and gel-immobilized metal nanoparticles for using them as nanocatalyst.
Main tasks:

  1. Production of synthetic hydrophilic polymer (polyvinylpyrolidone, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic acid, polyethyleneimine) protected nanoparticles of silver, gold and palladium;
  2. Immobilization of polymer-protected metal nanoparticles into matrix of responsive hydrogels on the basis of the homo- and copolymers of acrylamide and isopropylacrylamide;
  3. Research of structure, morphology and bulk phase properties of polymer-protected and gel-immobilized metal nanoparticles. Research of catalytic properties of gel-immobilized metal nanoparticles under hydrogenation and oxidation of model compounds;

Expected results:

  1. Developing production methods of metal nanoparticles by reduction metal salts in the presence of hydrophilic polymers of different nature and structure;
  2. Defining optimal conditions for immobilization of polymer-protected metal nanoparticles into matrix of pH- and heat-sensitive hydrogels;
  3. Information about structure and morphology of metal nanoparticles in the hydrogel matrix, also studying bulk phase properties of hydrogels depending on temperature, pH medium, ionic strength and in the water-organic solvent mixtures. Determination of interaction between catalytic activity gel-immobilized metal nanoparticles and bulk phase properties of hydrogels.

3. Project: Project: “Research of corrosion process of water duct (canal)” for 2010.
Aim of project: Studying corrosion processes of interior surface of water-pipes.
Main tasks:

  1. Making X-ray analysis of samples;
  2. Making metallographic analysis of samples.

Expected results:

  1. Compound of corrosion deposits on samples;
  2. Definition of corrosion range and depth.

4. Project: “Studying in-line corrosion process on oil main” for 2010.
Aim of project: Studying in-line corrosion process on oil main.
Main tasks:

  1. Making X-ray analysis of samples;
  2. Making metallographic analysis of samples.

Expected results:

  1. Compound of corrosion deposits on samples;
  2. Definition of corrosion range and depth.
